Escambia County's Marine Resources Division and Walter Marine placed 217 concrete modules across 43 reef sites offshore from Pensacola Pass. The structures sit in water 45 to 55 feet deep and include variations intended to support future comparisons of reef design and habitat performance.
Restoration and sport-fish funding supported most of the sites. Family and friends of charter captain Robert Edward “Eddie” Lively privately funded another site in his memory. County staff, wildlife officials, universities and local students helped shape the research design.
