WKRG reported from Escambia County after Walter Marine and the county Marine Resources Division completed 43 new reef sites using 217 concrete structures. The sites were placed about 4.5 nautical miles from Pensacola Pass in water 45 to 55 feet deep.
County officials described the reefs as accessible locations for fishing and diving and as a replicated research network. By varying habitat type and size, future students and scientists can compare how different structures perform and use those findings to improve later projects.
