Coastal Review visited Brunswick Town and Fort Anderson in North Carolina, where ship wakes and storms had cut deeply into a shoreline containing colonial and Civil War artifacts. Engineers installed a line of Walter Marine wave attenuators offshore from Dry's Wharf as the first phase of a larger protection project.
The slotted concrete structures reduce wave energy while leaving space for water to pass and marine life to settle. The project paired the offshore system with living shoreline methods intended to stabilize the bank and restore habitat.
