Florida Limestone Artificial Reef
$1,195

The “Florida Limestone” reef was developed over a three-year period and deployed as a new reef unit in 2007. It did everything we tried to accomplish and more. The idea came after I attended an international reef conference. Some scientists were telling me about Florida Limestone and the benefits of using it as an artificial reef. They had been deploying them in 5’ x 5’ boulders and talked about the instant growth and fish production. The reason for the success was the instant attraction of marine animals.

Concrete has a slightly different PH value than seawater and a lot plants and corals cannot tolerate it. That is why I used other material on my concrete tetrahedron reefs, to give the marine animals a place to attach. The soft Limestone has an even better surface friendly base than other reef materials I've used and has one other huge advantage, worms can bore into it. This brings an animal that usually shuns artificial reefs. Everyone knows how well an old wooden boat does as a reef; this is due to the worms.

For some reason worms attract fish and a reef with worms produces lots of fish. 5’ X 5’ boulders are impractical and too expensive to deploy here for private customers, so I needed a way to build a huge reef out of Florida Limestone without making it too heavy and/or expensive to deploy. I purchased some Florida Limestone and had it trucked to our yard in Orange Beach. I began to experiment with ways to use them in a reef, but everything I tried failed. Finally, I found a way to solve the weight and height problem. The patent is pending and we are offering the reef for sale as pictured. This reef does extremely well for Grouper, because it provides a cave-like home.

The Florida Limestone reef was developed using the best of our hurricane proof "Florida Special' reef, large footprint for a wide stance. It contains over 270' of rebar to make it solid. The rocks add a lot of surface area and the fish seem to love it. We have photos in our gallery of a customer holding up fish off the reef after only three months, and underwater video of my prototype version of the "Florida Limestone".
